Creative portrait photography in Manchester

If you're looking for a creative portrait photographer in Manchester offering stunning, imaginative and artistic portraits that capture your unique personality and style, you've come to the right place.

As a professional photographer, I specialise in creating bespoke portrait photography that showcases the essence of each person I photograph. I believe that every individual has a unique story to tell, and I aim to bring out your best qualities in every shot I take.

With years of experience in the photography industry, I have developed a keen eye for detail and a passion for creating images that stand out from the rest. My approach to portraiture is centred around you, the subject. I take the time to get to know you, your style and your vision for the shoot, ensuring that every aspect of the process is tailored to your specific needs.

Understand your goals

The first step to creating a great portrait is to understand what you are trying to convey. Are you releasing new music and you want to convey emotion through the portrait? Are you updating your headshot after a haircut? Take the time to really think this through and discuss it in detail with your photographer. The more you can pre-plan, the better your overall result will be.

Research

As with all photography projects, research and planning is a hugely important part of any creative process. Take the time to look into photographers you love and at portraits of others that have caught your eye. Head to places like Pinterest and Instagram, but also - be broad with your research, look for movies that have tones and colouring and an atmosphere that you love.

Go to an art gallery, find a landscape painting that conveys the colour and emotion you want to get across. It all helps to bring the vision to your mind of what you’ll want to create in the studio with your photographer.

Discussion and ideas generation

Once you have your reference images, talk everything through with your photographer and ask for their ideas and input. Talk to your friends and family, you never know who might have an idea up their sleeve. Carry a notepad with you, be ready to daydream, to allow interesting ideas to come to you. Keep your eyes open.

Plan

Once you have some interesting ideas, collate them in a notepad or a sketch pad. You’ll want to have this to refer to on the day of your shoot. Sometimes you can get caught up in other distracting elements of the shoot, so you’ll want to have something to refer to.

Location

Where you are shooting is just as important as what. Choose a location that suits the personality of your project, or if you're a photographer - of your subject. You might want a big beautiful daylight studio, to capture some really natural portraits or you might want a highly lit - closed off studio environment with multiple lights intricately angled at your subject. Out on location might be better, one of my recent shoots was for a comedian writing a show about growing up on a farm - and you guessed it, we shot her portraits on a farm. Thankfully in a big city like Manchester and its surrounding counties - you’ll have so many places to choose from.

Use props

Props can add an interesting element to your portraits and are a great go-to when you want something more creative. Choose props that complement your subject and add to the overall theme of the photoshoot. For example, musicians, instruments, sporting items. Anything that relates to their performance, if they perform or to their personality.

In conclusion, portrait photography is an art that requires creativity, patience, planning and a good understanding of your subject. By following these tips and tricks, you can create stunning and unique portraits that capture the essence of your subject. Remember to experiment with different techniques to create your own style, and have fun with it!
